What is the Coronado Speed Festival
Speed Festival Update #2

What is the Coronado Speed Festival?
Annually, the North Island Naval Air Station is opened up for two days to vintage car racing and an all around complete immersion into all things automotive. The best way to answer the question is to invite you to visit the event website:
http://fleetweeksandiego.org/coronadospeedfestival/
The Speed Festival is always part of San Diego Fleet Week and is a celebration of the naval presence in San Diego.
The Yellow Swarm is now an official club at the Coronado Speed Festival.
What does this mean, you ask?
1. We will be receiving Car Club Corral passes to distribute to fellow Swarmers that allow us to park our cars in the Car Club Corral that is directly behind the main grandstands. We will be parked together as The Yellow Swarm.
2. We have the opportunity to register for the drawing to win a hot lap in a race car or a pace lap before one of the races along with free tickets and a t-shirt. I will have these available at the July 19th gathering for the Drive-in movies.
3. We are able to participate in the annual Speed Festival Car Show.
As we get closer to the event date I will coordinate the distribution of Car Corral Passes and a likely meeting spot on Saturday morning before we parade into the corral together. We can plan on dinner after the last race on Saturday
details to come.
Unashamed Hype!
This is the most affordable Major car event that I know of. A similar event at Laguna Seca (The Monterey Historics) costs over twice as much and that doesnt include travel and hotel expenses to get there. This is local. In addition to our cars there will be approximately 2,000 car club cars on display over the 2 days. There is a special show of about 20 concours quality cars as well. The pits are open for visiting with the drivers and seeing the race cars up close. Seating is open so you can move around and enjoy different vantage points to view the race. And, all of this for a very affordable price.
One day admission, paid in advance, is $25 or $30 for day of event
Two day admission, paid in advance, is $35 or $40 on Saturday
Car show entry which includes admission, t-shirt, goody bag, and a chance at a trophy is $15 more.
You will be able to buy and print tickets on the SpeedFest website shortly.
Put it on your Yellow Swarm social calendar and plan to attend.

Coronado Speed Festival Update #2 - August 7th
Nanz,
I have some additional information regarding the Coronado Speed Festival that you can put into the website, and also a news flash email.
1. Swarm member, Wally Stevens, has arranged for a dinner meet after the last race on Saturday. A large room has been reserved at Tent City on Orange in Coronado. A short drive from where the racing is. Tent City is a historical spot in Coronado besides being a really nice restaurant. Here is the website http://www.tentcityrestaurant.com/ . The Miata Club has done this for a number of years, and it always turns out to be fun. If you look at the menu you will notice it is not necessarily cheap...but it sure is good.
2. I have received the Car Club Corral passes and will have them available on the Mountain Run on August 24th. If anyone wants to send me a self addressed stamped envelope I will mail them one if they can't make the 24th. My address is 1380 Shinly Place, Escondido 92026.
Also, I like the idea of meeting and driving over the bay bridge together. If we were to meet in Balboa Park in the parking lot near the Auto Museum at 7 AM, we could drive over the bridge, go to Tartines for a quick coffee and bite to eat before caravanning in to the Speed Festival. The Miata Club will meet at Tartines anyway. If you would rather separate from the Miata Club I will understand, but I do know that all of this stuff works.

Coronado Speed Festival Update #1
Steve Waid is coordinating this gathering
here is his latest news on the gathering:
Many of you are probably aware of the Speed Channel on cable TV and the show "Car Crazy" that is hosted by Barry Meguiar of Meguiars Car Care products.
On June 23rd Barry interviewed Admiral John Nathman as the special guest on his half hour episode of Car Crazy. This was the first of two features done by Car Crazy of the Coronado Speed Festival. The second
one will air in September closer to the 2008 event.
The interview focuses on the military and the similarities that their are between auto racing and flying a fighter jet. It gives a good look into the naval presence in San Diego and hints of things to come with the "Race at the Base" as it is known.
If you would like to view the episode just go to CarCrazyCentral.com and go to the TV Shows tab at the top.
or click on this link http://www.carcrazycentral.com/TV-Show-Watch-Episodes.aspx?VideoID=377
If you haven't been to the Coronado Speed Festival before this is a pretty good teaser.
